Aloha, here I share some insight on how homeschooling is going in my own hale and offer some shared experiences that mold my teaching approach, that may be helpful in your own hale.
Raising our keiki in a world where chanting is normal, creates comfortability within each keiki, establishing their self-identity as a Hawaiian. Chanting is our way of documenting data, important events, and recognizing environmental entities that comprise the Hawaiian exsistence.
My keiki and I discuss throughout the day, the different weather phenomenon that we come to experience. They summarize it using the kilo observation books, and practice sharing data as a presentation. My daughterʻs kilo book develops her descriptive writing. My sonʻs kilo book supports number sense.
After collecting a month worth of weather data, we tally up the weather occurrences, create monthly weather statements, that describe the month prevailing weather patterns, and have healthy weather discussion and predictions.
Observing the growth stages of fruiting trees at home and in your community is a visual way for keiki and ʻohana to understand time. Identify when the avocado and lychee are flowering, and when they are fruiting. Point them out as you drive around your community. Collect data over months. then share out your finding.
